The U.S. Navy is asking government investigators to suppress information concerning the toxic water scandal at the Marine Corps' Camp Lejeune, according to a letter obtained Thursday by The Huffington Post.
The letter, signed by Maj. Gen. J.A. Kessler of the Marine Corps and dated Jan. 5, 2012, asks the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry to withhold from a forthcoming report details about the whereabouts of water lines, wells, treatment plants and storage tanks on the North Carolina military base -- in the name of national security.
"The Marine Corps understands the need to share information with the scientific community," writes Kessler, the Marines' assistant deputy commandant for installations and logistics. "Prudence requires, however, that information sharing be within the rubric of responsible force protection."
Government watchdogs and environmental advocates said they interpret the letter as further evidence of a Navy effort to evade culpability for what many call the worst and largest drinking water contamination in U.S. history.
Congress assigned the disease registry to trace when, where and at what levels Camp Lejeune's drinking water was tainted with toxic industrial chemicals from the late-1950s to the 1980s. The research is a prerequisite for a series of health studies exploring links between chemical exposures and what appears to be increased levels of disease among former Camp Lejeune residents, including male breast cancer and childhood leukemia.

notsojingo_____Hello good article but old subject which was talked about in a documentary called Iraq For Sale. Which you can find a video of by going to www.IraqForSale.com /you will find many other interesting things to discover in the documentary too. Maria-Lyn

I'm on the disease registry and I see nothing wrong with keeping the location of these lines out of the public domain. It seems a no brainer to me.
Camp Lejeune is home then entire 2d Marine Division, with many other supporting units stationed there including the families of these Marines. Allowing the location of the water supply lines doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do.
Nothing can be done about the info that's already out there, but I don't see how putting even more info of out there helps.
Make the info available to any veteran involved in a lawsuit, receiving care for a related illness or anyone on the disease registry and that should be a good compromise.

Rodney 889389___— I would take that to mean that you are one of the cover up junkies that cannot handle the American People knowing what we have done to even our Own Soldiers. And that continue to happen as long as the idea is to Steal all the Money for Our Soldiers and leave them with deplorable condition to live under? Well I think not anymore should we hide the truth of what the Military Industrial Complex is/or isn't providing for Our Brave Soldiers.

Tell me, why do you need to know where the water lines are at Camp Lejeune? What possible damage to your way of life is done by not knowing this piece of information.
If you are not affected by the contamination, you don't need to know it.
I lost nearly 30 friends from that base, I risked my life defending this nation while stationed at that base and I don't need your goddamn attitude.
I provided you some information from the prospective of a Marine that was affected by the contaminated water while serving my nation, I don't owe you jack - take if for what it's worth or not, frankly I don't give a @!$%#.

I'm with Rodney on this one...they should identify the problem but giving out the whereabouts of the contaminated tanks or plants would be irresponsible. There are too many crazies out there looking for a weakness as it is. Yes there should be an investigation and a solution but we don't need to compromise security. No cover up just a sensiable approach instead of a knee jerk reaction...

Rodney889389______I misread the article and I thought it was talking about the dirty water that our Soldiers were being exposed to in Iraq. Because there was a whistleblower in the documentary Iraq for sale that testfied that Our Soldiers were being exposed to very toxic water to drink/bath in/wash their clothes in/to cook with. And this grown man cried that we were allowing this to continue and did nothing to fix it. That may also why you lost so many of your friends. Sorry I didn't understand the article/and all I can do is say I'm sorry. And to let you know how I got things confused. Bless You and I hope you will except my sincere apoligy. Maria-Lyn

Understood maria, no harm no foul...
I was actually stationed there (Camp Lejeune) in the 80s before the Navy admitted the water was contaminated, they really were covering it up at that time.
I served with the 24th MAU. Not sure how old you are so you may not be aware of this incident, but our unit took a big hit on 23 Oct 1983 and we lost nearly 230 Marines to a terrorist's 12,000lb truck bomb. All were from Camp Lejeune.
Sorry for my short temper
God Bless

Rodney-889389_____I do remember the bombing of 1983/around Lebanon & Beirut wasn't it? Yeh like I was saying when you the article mentioned contaminated water I thought it was talking about the same thing happening to our Soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan too/in this war or part Illegal war in Iraq. Check out the story Iraq for Sale at www.iraqforsale.com and you will see what I'm talking about the filthy water situation continues today. Maria-Lyn

Obama's War
The Wounded Platoon
NatGeo's - Inside Shock and Awe
Yeh like I was saying when you the article mentioned contaminated water
That case is unrelated to the Camp Lejeune case.

Rodney-889389_____Was I right about the bombing I mentioned /that you were talking about? And I understand now that the Camp Lejeune case was unrelated. But I was just trying to inform you that that kind of crap is still going on today. And that they are still poisoning Our Brave Soldiers. God Bless Maria_Lyn

I'm sorry, didn't realize I didn't answer that - yes, we were attacked in Beirut.
For me, the difference in the two is the that Navy/Marine Corps lied to us, this time they farmed out the contract to KBR...not sure which is more disturbing, to tell the truth.
In both cases we were failed by those charged with protecting us, lawmakers. They may be more of a problem that the DoD.
Lawmakers say the right things when they want us to fight, but they really don't give a damn when we get home - not all, but many.
- 4 votes
Rodney-889389______I so agree with you there only now they don't even care about you guys when you are fighting either it looks like that to me. Yes I never will forget that bombing in Beirut/ how could we forget? After the cost of 230 of our brave Soldiers I never will forget. Sending you a FR hope you'll accept. Maria-lyn

Rodney889389_____How is your day going? And are we still on the subject of contaminated water. Because the more I think about it/the more I get pissed off that we would hurt Our own Soldiers with such little regards. I don't know why but I have the Vietnam war on my mind today and I remember what it took for Our Nation to bring that war to an end. I fear that's what it's going to take again to get us out of these wars too. At least I know we have to something to stop the continuing abuse our Soldiers are made subject to. Just rambling guess I'll go. Maria-Lyn

I'm doing well, thanks, off this weekend :)
KBR has really abused their privilege of providing support to our troops, from sub par showers that are/were killing our guys to the water issue, it seems that our lawmakers just don't care it.
With membership in the military representing single digits (as a percentage of the population) there isn't a popular outcry over the conditions our troops suffer under. Take the fiasco at Walter Reed Medical Center several years ago. A facility that was dead smack in the middle of our political capital and lawmakers seem totally oblivious to the plight the men and women who were receiving such poor treatment. A facility that lawmakers would use for photo ops, how they could be so clueless to what was going on?
Seeing such poor treatment is maddening, it really is sad that so few people really care enough contact their lawmakers and express their disgust.
I fear that's what it's going to take again to get us out of these wars too. At least I know we have to something to stop the continuing abuse our Soldiers are made subject to
Unfortunately, we are gearing up for global conflict. Even though we are out of Iraq, we will continue to plan and execute offensive operations on a global level. We just added a second Carrier Battle Group to the IO/MED AO (Indian Ocean/Mediterranean), North Korea and China are keeping the 7th Fleet active in the far east and our black ops guys have seen their ranks swell to numbers that no one could have ever imagine before 911.
We are in for a very long period of active combat for our forces, our VA system will be stretched to the breaking point and most Americans don't really seem to care because it out of sight - out mine.
I'm glad to see people like yourself that really care about our plight, know that you are appreciated and hopefully more people will become aware of what's really happening to our men and women in uniform and take stand.

Here's a series of articles on the Global War you may be interested in reading, I haven't had a chance to read much of it, but the little I have seems very interesting.

Rodney889389____Yes I am always on and off writing of our Soldiers and the mistreatment they are receiving to try to make more people aware of the crisis of the ill care Our Soldiers are getting/or I mean not getting.
- 2 votes
Thank you...as vets, we welcome the support and appreciate the effort of people like yourself.
The next decade will see a lot more guys coming home needing care, keep the pressure on lawmakers. There's been efforts to cut the VA budget, this just can't be allowed to happen. We need and support from people like you to keep that from happening.

Maria Lyn and Rodney,
:-)))
It is great to see Friends made and issues discussed! The Camp Lejeune Water Poisoning is a vile example of where secrets can lead, but if the US Navy can get away with it, who's to say what and where this stops?
The fact that our government would allow poisoning of our own soldiers is infuriating, but telling. I guarantee the Generals do not drink the same water...and this can happen in the US or Iraq or ??? Thanks for the great links as well, both of you.
Thank You for Your Service, Rodney. And ALL US Active Duty/Veterans/MIA and their Families which have sacrificied so much for so many!
FR Sent, Rodney

Rodney889389_______I will do my best to get the issues and my opinion out about the deplorable conditions our Troops receive that is abusive. And I will also get out the things that our Government cheats our Soldiers out of. I will have to say though that sometimes after I've posted some of it. It has a tendency to disappear. But when I ask what might have happened I'm always told that they don't know. And then try to accuse me of accidentally deleting it. Ijust say yeah right some how I just love deleting my own articles. Anyway onward with the task of making the public aware and educated. Maria-Lyn

Again, thanks, keep fighting for our troops because they are fight for us...

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
I was honored to serve and would do it again in a heartbeat if called.
I FR didn't show up, but I'll send one to you...
The fact that our government would allow poisoning of our own soldiers is infuriating, but telling.
One of the things that keeps coming back to me are flashes of times when I would be drinking the water at that base. After PT or in the chow hall, we didn't have a clue, but the DoD knew and covered it up, but let us continue to drink water they knew could harm us...it's amazing when you really think about it.

notsojingo... Here I am all worried about exposure to cesium, and strontium, and iodine particles from Fukushima, and now I find out I'd been drinking poison water! I'm gonna die, notsojingo, I'm gonna die! Well, someday anyhow, you know what I mean. Peace be with you, and good stories by the way.

LOL!! Thanks Dustin!!! You are more than welcome. It is just my way to keep folks aware of just how much can go on right under our collective noses which is harmful and/or deceitful while those responsible for it are insisting all is well.
I do know what you mean, and thanks for stopping by!!
