Why are Britain's great art houses in bed with Big Oil?

The heads of the Tate, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Opera House and British Museum would probably scoff at the notion that the financial backers of corporate news media have no influence or effect on their content. Yet they still want us to believe that their own shows will in no way be influenced by the views and imperatives of Big Oil, after they came together to announce the renewal of sponsorship deals with BP worth £10m up to 2017.

Corporations are not democratic institutions. They are vast blocs of unaccountable private power; and the more they advance into the central areas of public life, the more they stultify the ways in which we talk to each other and think about our place in the world, on this little patch of overburden we call home.

Find this article an example of how Corporate Influence has become so empowered as to create an International structure which can change the paradigm of thought, now and for the future generations, due to the unchecked power they wield.

This is in no way just an American issue.

Peace

because in england, big oil is one of the few industries that can actually afford to sponsor these events. So you have a choice, don't have the event, or get the money to fund the event from companies that can afford and are willing to pay for it.

That is clearly the case, Jonathon. As are the resultant conditions to these contributions. Just another brick in the wall.

      Peace

hate to be obvious, but what is one of the major paint mediums (and I'm not talking about acrylic or watercolor)?

          Hi bell42,

I think that the kind of oil used in painting comes pressed out of seeds, and in fact is a vegetable oil. However some painters like to use Mineral Spirits for their clean up instead of turpintine.

I usually use linseed oil on wood, but it has lots of uses.
